Start-Ups Helping International Students Improve Their English Language Competency

It is not uncommon for international university students to have poor written and spoken English. This is a significant problem in the western higher education system. International students, particularly those from Asian nations, are more likely to have below average English language competency than their peers. Students with limited English language skills face several significant educational consequences. Often it affects the quality of their work as well as inhibiting the learning process. Further, students with limited spoken English may find group tasks and networking even more challenging than they ought to be. Services offered range from dialogue exchange, to development of understanding of colloquial language as well as assistance with more advanced levels of written English. The online nature of these businesses means they are generally cost-effective, non-invasive and highly flexible. Naturally, university students need English tuition to fit in and around their regular classes. Many of the new service providers have taken account of this and ensured that tutors are available in the evening and during the weekend.

Whilst the recent introduction of online English tuition services has already made a significant impact on the lives of numerous international university students, much is still to be done to ensure that students aren’t unnecessarily denied the best possible educational experience. There is no longer an excuse for international students not to take the initiative to actively improve their English competency whilst they undertake their university studies. This is another example of technology and the internet facilitating innovation to solve a problem that has been, to date, more or less left to fester.
