Manual Removal of Field Codes

December 10, 2008

Field codes should ideally be removed using EndNote as this will remove only EndNote field codes. To do this in Word – go to the EndNote tab in Word and select Convert Citations and Bibibliography:Convert to Plain Text. For other versions, click on the Remove Field Codes option on the EndNote toolbar.

However, there may be cases (such as a non-EndNote user) where a person wants to remove these manually from the document. How to do this is outlined below. However, this method will remove all field codes in a document (not just EndNote ones) – so use a copy of the original.

In Windows:

  • Make a backup of your document, then open it.
  • Press [Ctrl]+A on the keyboard to highlight everything.
  • Press [Ctrl]+6 (above the “T” and “Y” key – or [Ctrl]+Shift+F9) to remove any additional hidden field codes.
  • Press [Ctrl]+C to copy the highlighted text.
  • Open a new document and press [Ctrl]+V to paste.

In Mac OS X:

  • Make a backup of your document, then open it.
  • Press [Apple]+A on the keyboard to highlight everything.
  • Press [Apple]+6 (above the “T” and “Y” key) to remove any additional hidden field codes.
  • Press [Apple]+C to copy the highlighted text.
  • Open a new document and press [Apple]+V to paste.
